Sunshine Acai Smoothie – Guest Recipe by Gypsy Wandering

I knew of Tasha before I met her through her breathtakingly beautiful Instagram account ‘Gypsy Wandering.’ When she appeared at Naked Treaties one day, (the raw, vegan cafe in Byron Bay that I was working at), I was a little star struck 😉 Tasha is a beautiful young girl that you fall in love with upon meeting, added to that, she is also intelligent, creative, independent, courageous and not afraid to say what she thinks. Unlike many of the young women out there these days with huge social media followings, Tasha always remains true to the beat of her heart. There is no mask, no trying, no falsity- she is who she is- and that person is remarkable and inspiring.

A passionate vegan, animal rights advocate and lover of nature, the ocean and the environment, Tasha’s mission is also one of education. After moving through her own challenges with food and health, she has a vibrant outlook on living life fully and adventurously. Her outer beauty is a radiant refection of her inner soul and spirit.

Have you always been interested in healthy food and wellbeing or was there a significant moment of change for you?

Growing up vegetarian I’ve always had an interest in plant-foods and getting the optimal amount of nutrients from them…It’s always fascinated me how ailments can be healed by plants. It’s just amazing that nature provides these incredible healing cultivations, which have been utilised in ancient civilisations and traditions for years… and yet modern society has invented this quick-fix pill culture that just covers up the symptoms of the issue, instead of healing the core…but it’s the most sought-after, or more accurately – more most widely used – solution in Western Culture..

What do you love the most about eating a vibrant plant-based diet?

At the risk of sounding self righteous; knowing that you’re lifestyle doesn’t contribute to the slaughter of 500 million innocent creatures annually, while you’re still able to nourish yourself completely, and better that most carnivores…I mean that is an amazing feeling.

Eating raw or mostly raw, and entirely plant based makes you feel incredible! You barely need to go on huge cleanses or “health kicks” because your body is constantly taking the vibration that plant food has and fully using it, and you’re detoxing your system on some level every day.

What are a few ingredients you use everyday in your kitchen?

Spirulina, Acai, sauerkraut and I’m currently obsessed with black tahini and coconut vinegar. People can say what they will about sugar, cocaine…but black tahini is the most addictive substance on the planet. Except it’s you know, healthy.

If you were trying to convert someone to your dietary philosophy, what would you make for them?

Oooh, vegan cakes always seem to tide people over… so maybe a raw caramel slice or I’d just bring them one from Combi Coffee in Melbourne because theirs is the closest thing to magic I’ve ever had the pleasure of eating. But I’m told my raw guacamole and leafy green nachos are really good – thanks to my Abuela for inspiring that one!

How do you enjoy spending time to yourself?

Getting lost in the depths of nature, live music, or a good book. It depends what day you ask me, but as long as you have at least five minutes a day to yourself immersed in something that makes every kinesthesia of your being feel alive – you’ll be able to deal with life’s challenges better; your soul and sanity will thank you for it.

What is something in the world right now that you are passionate about?

Animal welfare is something that has been my passion since I was a little kid… the equal consideration pertaining to the treatment of our fellow earthlings is an uphill battle. But so were civil and women’s rights, so it’s not something that cannot be done… Humanity needs to get over this toxic superiority complex; and realise that although in a lot of ways we are more powerful than other creatures, that does not make us better than them, or give us a right to use and abuse them at our disposal. We should be using our position as the most advantaged species to help those who are not as fortunate – we all have an equal right to be here, and live in harmony – without discrimination based on race, religion, gender, sexual orientation or species. Humans are the only ones who have created this problem, humans are the only ones who are able to fix it.

Is there a cause that you support or assist with in any way?

I have been involved in animal welfare projects all my life … and aside from donating monetarily, there are so many ways people can find to help these causes. Hopefully through writing and social media platforms, I’m helping to raise awareness on the subject and reaching out to people to make more kind choices.

I work in an animal shelter 5 days a week as well, so hopefully I’m giving back as much as I can at this stage.

What are you the most excited about in your world right now?

Mostly travelling ….there’s just something about setting of on an adventure, whether it be a spontaneous roadtrip or a sabbatical halfway across the world. I travelled by myself for the first time ever this year and it was an incredible experience…I can’t wait to explore this beautiful world more!

I’m also really excited to (finally!) relaunch my blog at the end of this coming summer…so keep an eye out!

In this Summer heat, can you share your favourite recipe to make on a warm day?

This is smoothie is still my favourite creation and perfect for a salty, balmy day spent in the ocean and sun…

 Tasha’s sunshine superfood smoothie-

  •  1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice (blood orange is also amazing in this)

  • handful pomegranate seeds
  • handful cherries
  • tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 frozen acai pack or 1 tablespoon acai powder
